TONIGHT'S AGENDA and MINUTES

Interfaith Coalition of Affordable Housing Presentation

Don introduced the members of the Interfaith Coalition of Affordable Housing who presented a slide show which explained their group's efforts to provide affordable housing in Howard County to those middle class working people whose work is centered in the county but would otherwise not be able to afford to live here. The objective is to provide housing to those providing services to the county thus serving the needs of everyone. Brochures, outlining and summarizing the presentation, were distributed to the Council Members (Appendix C).

Updates

o Parish Picnic - Barbara Riley Because of other commitments, the Knights of Columbus had to decline the offer to spearhead the planning of the parish picnic. The chairman of the Men's Club has been contacted to take up the project. If the picnic doesn't work out this year, it was suggested that the planning for next year's picnic should begin, as soon as possible.

o Welcoming Booklet Estimates - George Bardsley George reported that there would be no cost to the parish for the welcoming booklet and the printing company would solicit the advertising to cover the cost. The timing and scheduling is to be coordinated. George will be calling his list of contacts to ascertain whether they are still interested in helping out with the project. He proposed using a format similar to that of St. Louis. He recommended enough copies for every registered parish family, but advised against mailing the copies, citing the prohibitive cost. Mary Ann Gehle suggested that Christmas may be the best time to distribute copies to the parishioners.

To nurture the business people in the Parish, Mary Ann Gehle proposed creating an arm of the Development Committee that would solicit offers to the Parish business community to advertise their services or businesses in the various publications of the Parish, such as the newsletter, bulletin, the annual benefit or the new welcoming booklet. In turn, efforts should be made to encourage support of these businesses from the parishioners.

o Planning Session, Yearly Reports and Budget Requests, Parish Banner - Mary Ann Gehle Mary Ann sent out requests for the yearly reports and asked that they be submitted electronically. They will be forwarded to the Council members. The reports are very helpful for Father Mike in understanding how many are involved and what is being accomplished in the Committees. She reminded the Council of the planning session that will be attended by Charlie Hiebler and Dennis Moore will be co-moderator for the evening. There will also be 5 planning mission facilitators. The benefit committee has suggested that a banner, bearing the Parish mission statement, be created and displayed at different Parish functions and events so that the message is seen and that there is understanding that what we do relates to the statement. There were concerns that the statement should be abbreviated, in some way.

Don D'Valle relayed the concern of crowded holiday masses and asked about ways to balance attendance between the Mass conducted in the Church and in the hall. Don asked Amy Myers to share the concern and to offer any suggestions they may have to alleviate the problem of overcrowding in one Mass and slight attendance at the other.
Don also reported that the problem with Father's microphone used during Mass has prompted the suggestion to buy a new one. Father Mike said that Anna Esposito will be meeting with DSL to discuss the issue to address the entire system to work out the problems.
Julie Landsman expressed the desire of the youth in the parish to participate in a Mass devoted to the youth. She proposed a Mass, to be held once a month, that would address the issues of the youth and mentioned the nationwide organization called "Life Teen" which focuses on bring teens closer to Christ. Her hope is that with a special Mass devoted to the youth, more will become involved in their faith. It was suggested that Ted Burkhardt explore how other parishes are handling similar Masses to determine the best course of action for St. Michael's.

Noreen Christian volunteered to lead the opening prayer at the next meeting.

The 4/6/2005 meeting was adjourned at 9:15
