It has been a practice from the days of the early Church to use particular acronyms, taken mostly from Latin & Greek words, as symbols & abbreviations. Test your knowledge! A and ω (alpha and omega)- the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet symbolize the eternity and infinity of God, and Christ who is the beginning and the end. AMDG (Latin: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam)- means `For the greater glory of God.' BVM (Blessed Virgin Mary) DV (Latin: Deo volente)—means “God willing,” or “by God’s Will”) JMJ Jesus, Mary & Joseph INRI (Latin: Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum) which means `Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,' the title which was placed on the sign over Jesus’ cross (John 19:19) ICHTHYS (Greek: Iesous Christos Theou Yos Soter) means `Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.' The letters of this acronym also form the Greek word for `fish.' For this reason, an early Christian symbol for Christ was the fish. It was a secret symbol for the Redeemer during the days of persecution against the Christians. We still see this symbol today in many places, including on the back of automobiles!
